With a touch of impressionism and the way these paintings capture the light, Liz Turnbull’s artworks have been compared to Monet and Turner; both of whom have influenced her work. After very successful exhibitions, Liz has gained a loyal following of both avid art lovers and repeat buyers who have fallen in love with these evocative and emotive atmospheric scenes.
Liz’s paintings explore our landscape, are highly textured and layered creating moody and thought provoking scenes. Liz is fascinated with light, water and how our landscape’s mood can be changed by light alone. She creates her paintings using acrylic which is either applied thickly in layers when depicting a dryer ground or fluidly when painting water scenes, both of which have a very distinctive and unique style. She paints on both fine art paper and canvas all of which is framed to a high archival standard using a contemporary style of framing.
Liz began painting 25 years ago while living in a small southern Bohemian town in the Czech Republic. Liz’s earlier paintings depicted these heritage buildings. She continued painting while living in France for two years but back in NZ, Liz was struck by a new appreciation for the surreal light and vivid yet harmonious colours of her homeland and this is strongly emphasised in her work.
Liz’s studio is a converted 50-year-old woolshed situated in the foothills, 10 minutes south of Katikati, Bay of Plenty. The Woolshed overlooks an ever-changing vista of orchard-strewn valley, farmland and the Pacific Ocean beyond.
